demons
The old ways (2020)๐น
Ok, I'll be honest, it wasn't what I was expecting from a horror movie based on Mexican demon legends. But it was somewhat enjoyable. Still disappointed somehow.
The narrative follows a young Mexican-American journalist that is after mysterious stories of witchcraft in her hometown back in Veracruz, Mexico. The movie starts abruptly with our main character, Cristina Lopez, being kidnapped by locals who claim she is possessed by some demon๐น.
Throughout the movie, she denies being possessed and firmly says she does need no exorcism to be done on her. But everything changes when she realizes otherwise. Now, with the help of the local "Bruja" and her son, she needs to get that thing out of her. Cristina is told not to leave unless she is demon-free, though, she is willing to escape from this whole "shenanigan" (she thought) but forces keep her in.
๐This is "La bruja". Isn't she cute to be that good? ๐
With the help of that☝️ woman, Cristina finds out how to put an end to the demon that later on she discovered is nothing but Postehki (it's just a fictional demon that feeds off those who are soul-broken and hopeless). She accepts she is possessed after disturbing events occur; these events show how strong the demon is getting.
It is assumed Cristina got the demon in her when she ignorantly goes into a dangerous cave called "La Boca". If you see it closely, you can realize it is dangerous but you guys know how "naive" our characters are. It is also said that this movie is not based on true stories but the world can take a peek at the old ways that still remain somehow in the Mexican native American folklore. True or not, the culture around bad spirits and old demons needs to be passed down from generation to generation. Therefore, this whole legacy will not end with "la bruja", it is later passed down to Cristina who is eager to protect the village from dark forces.
Back to my feelings on this movie, I am a little disappointed but once I got what the plot was actually about. I started liking it a little bit more. In addition to what I said, it is quite important (no spoiler) to mention Cristina is addicted to heroin, this part of her life shows that we all get demons anywhere and every day, any action truly matters and affects our lives. The true demon here is ourselves and it is rewarding to say that we can all defeat the sh*t out of bad-timing and broken times if you set your mind to. You can be the demon who destroys your life but you can be the exorcist who frees you as well.
