Pinocchio (2022) 🤥
“Little wooden boy, may you rise with the sun and walk
the earth”
What an exciting
film we have here, critics said it and I’m going to say too, Guillermo del Toro
did it again. And this time hit everybody’s heart. NOT SPOILER, it is the story
we all know about that little wooden boy who can’t lie without growing a nose
but (it is a big one) the director added that extra Guillermo del Toro thing
that makes this stop motion film so special. Keep reading and you’ll see why.
The film is
set in 1940s fascist Italy (yeah, World War II). This gave some more dramatic momentos
to the historical context. Guillermo included some of the elements found in
Carlo Collodi’s original 1883 tale, therefore, it is essential to say the film
itself stayed true to the original tale (kind of). The movie introduced us to
Geppeto and his son Carlo who seemed to have a strong bond, it is delightful to
see such charming Geppeto and Carlo scenes but, on a bombing night, Carlo, unacquainted
with what was going to happen, passed away.
In Geppeto’s
desperate urge for having Carlo back, he created Pinocchio from Carlo’s tree. I
think we all agree on how the movie goes so far. We all know that mischievous,
naïve, and boisterous wooden boy and Guillermo’s Pinocchio is no exception.
Talking about character development, Pinocchio had a difficult one. Going from
an immortal rebel boy to a loving (but still naïve) character.
Guillermo had
the job to create not just one mystical creature but two, the wood sprite
sisters. Time after time, Guillermo impresses us with creatures (good or evil)
that unaccountably make us feel this melancholia. These fantastic creatures
represent life and death and…Yeah. Life and death constitute the moral of this
fable. Also, don’t behave badly, or bad things will happen to you.
Life is good
and everybody should live it right without disturbing others. Your actions
should be prioritized over your sake, otherwise, you might be taking the word
of the untrustworthy. That’s what happened to our so guideless Pinocchio who
was prone to fall victim to poor advice.
“The One Thing That Makes Human Life Precious and
Meaningful, You See, Is How Brief It Is” – Wood sprite
It is
remarkable and inspiring how del Toro managed such gloomy topics like death in
a way that children won’t be scared. This film instantly became a classic and
it is now part of my comfort zone. This stop-motion art piece will arduously
teach several life lessons.
