How I live now (2013) πͺ
A very alternate story to the very repetitive adolescent romance.
This type of romantic film with certain unusual war-like elements has always fascinated me as a movie buff, telling a love story in wartime in 21st-century England; How I Live Now follows the life of Daisy (played by Saoirse Ronan), a 16-year-old girl who suffers from low self-esteem and presents herself as an obsessive-compulsive punk-rock teenage. In the opening sequences, a somewhat conflictive and distrustful Daisy is announced towards her cousins (whom she did not know), From the plot’s context, we realize the relationship with her father is not quite the best and having a deceased mother feels like an outcast in his own family. Due to her estrangement and her rebelliousness, she is sent to England to spend time with her aunt and her cousins without guessing the war that would break out.
The film puts a strong focus on character development, and that's where Daisy's cousins come in, country kids in the Welsh countryside. We have Eddie, the older cousin with whom she begins a delicate romance, Isaac, the second cousin so jovial and cheerful, he gets along with Daisy and helps her blend in on the farm, and then we have little Piper, who is just a typical child who wants to have fun.
Sooner or later, those laughers will fade away with the arrival of the
third world war in Europe; England is gripped with anxiety and filled with
tension over the recent terrorist attacks in London. For the characters, the
war means a turning point and a radical change to their routine, generating
uncertainty and loss. Unfortunately, martial law is declared and the cousins
are separated by the army, but not all face the same fate. Daisy and Eddie
promise to meet again, and Daisy undertakes a dangerous journey with Piper, the
youngest of the cousins, to return to the farm. Along the way, she faces all
kinds of threats and difficulties, but she also finds moments of hope and
solidarity. Daisy will have to grow up and fight for her love and her survival,
as the world she knew falls apart.
How I Live Now is a film that tries to link both romance and war-like genres, offering an original and emotional vision of the end of the world. The film features some solid performances, effective direction, and an engrossing plot. It is a reflection on love, war, and survival, which raises issues such as the value of family, the importance of personal choices, and the consequences of violence. It does not intend to be a realistic portrayal of a nuclear war, but rather a metaphor for the end of childhood and the beginning of adulthood.
