Malèna (2000) 💄
Hey! Malèna is passing, so beautiful with her loneliness
The film is narrated from the point of view of Renato Amoroso, the 13-year-old boy who, one morning in a Sicilian villa, discovered what would become his first love obsession, Malèna Scordia. It is difficult to verify who is the true protagonist in our innocent love story, it can be Renato as the narrator of Malèna's odyssey or Malèna herself as the protagonist of the tragedy.
Perhaps the main character is Renato. Certainly, he is the one who plays
the role of a hero by wanting to win her over and protect her. He faces what
other young boy at that age goes through, and it is becoming a man as fast as
they can. Set in World War II Italy, this film tells a story that breaks
innocence, with glimpses of comedy we think will be fun to watch (as Italian
drama movies often are) but further on we get into dark moments in the lives of
the protagonists and witness how this dark event in human history strongly
influences the decisions of Malèna and Renato.
On the other side of the plot, we have Malèna, a young and mild-mannered
woman whose impact on others due to her beauty leads her to make decisions that
question her morals. Malena becomes the object of desire and hatred of the
town's inhabitants, who envy her, slander her, and attack her. In the film, we
can appreciate how the society then, judging and severely sexist, gave her that
radical and tragic character development. Malena is a character that evolves
from innocence to experience, from submission to rebellion, from pain to joy.
Perhaps the film is comedy, but it deals with problems of inequality and
carnal desires on the part of Renato towards Malena who, in his childish
innocence, believes that he can protect her from adult problems. Malena, in her
absolute discretion, goes through dark moments, from the loss of her husband to
the estrangement and subsequent death of her father.
In conclusion, the film Malena is about love, beauty, war, and
innocence, from the point of view of a boy who falls in love with a beautiful
and long-suffering woman in Sicily during World War II. It tells us a little
about the imposed role of women in society; Malena, as a woman, is not a
passive victim, but a woman who fights to survive in a hostile context. It’s a
clear criticism of the men’s hypocrisy and the complicity of other women in the
patriarchal system. Is being beautiful synonymous with threat?
