Perfect days (2023) ๐
“Now is now”
The film follows the minimalist life of our stoic character Hirayama, a public toilet cleaner in Tokyo. A man who seeks to see the bright side of life as a new day begins.
Hirayama, a single old man in Tokyo
In its opening act, the film immerses viewers in the mundane existence of a blue-collar worker, presenting a narrative void of extraordinary events or unexpected twists. It paints a portrait of a regular man leading an unremarkable life in the present moment. However, amidst the rigidity of his daily routine, the protagonist finds solace in his deep-rooted love for music and literature. He certainly has a passion for art and enjoys capturing nature through the lens of his camera. In his spare time, he meticulously cares for bonsai trees, tending to them with care and precision. Seeking moments of respite, he frequents a local bar during his day off, seeking connection and perhaps a temporary escape from the monotony of his existence. Pedaling around the city on his bicycle, he explores its streets, discovering hidden gems and encountering the diverse tapestry of urban life.
Hirayama and his daily routine
The protagonist's professionalism shines through effortlessly in his job, yet it is his acute attention to detail and inner tranquility that enable him to truly perceive the individuals he encounters. With unwavering kindness and a hopeful outlook, he navigates the ordinary moments of his everyday existence, infusing them with a touch of optimism. As he embarks on his daily commute, his ears are graced by the sounds of alternative rock, transporting him to a bygone era of tranquility. The resonating tunes, spanning decades, subconsciously weave a melodic narrative, effortlessly intertwining the simplicity of modern life with the timeless allure of yesterday years. From Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" to the soulful ballads of Janis Joplin and the evocative compositions of Van Morrison, these iconic songs serve as a harmonious backdrop, mirroring the unassuming yet contemporary journey of our protagonist.
The quiet frames of "Perfect days" are gold to me
In reality, apart from his love of trees, music and literature and his peculiar joy of life, we know little else about the character. Hirayama seems to have found inner balance, but his experience takes a dramatic twist with the unexpected arrival of his niece. Her presence triggers memories of Hirayama's tumultuous past.

The film gracefully guides us through Hirayama's daily routine at a low but captivating pace, inviting us to embark on a profound philosophical and poetic exploration of the commonplace. It illuminates the profound truth that discovering beauty within life's simplest aspects and cherishing the fleeting moments can bring about a profound sense of unadulterated contentment. The act of expressing gratitude for the opportunity to embrace the present moment serves as a humbling reminder of our place on earth. In a world that often feels disconnected from nature's rhythms, establishing a routine that nurtures a sense of personal fulfillment becomes a compassionate gesture towards our own hearts. By learning to appreciate even the seemingly inconsequential details, we discover the essence of true living.

I wasn't particularly rooting for this film to win "best international picture" but it definitely has a place in my heart
